OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICE IN UKRAINE

We have two new trips planned for 2010. The first is from May 12 to May 21, 2010. The land travel cost for this trip will be $1000. This will cover accommodations, meals, and transportation within Ukraine. Participants will need to arrange for their own air transportation to and from Kiev.

The second Ukraine trip is scheduled for September 10 to September 26, 2010. The land travel cost for this trip will be $1500. The land travel cost will cover accommodations, meals, and transportation within Ukraine. Participants will need to arrange for their own air transportation to and from Kiev.

On each trip we work with persons with disabilities in their homes for a full 5 days in the community of Chernivtsi. We also have opportunities to work in a children’s hospital and a care facility for aged and disabled adults. Therapists have been welcomed as lecturers on rehabilitation topics to include: occupational therapy treatments for children and adults. Services are provided by teams of therapists and entry level OT students. Each team consists of 4-5 therapists and students and a translator. Each team has the same translator throughout our time in Chernivtsi.

Each work day begins with a quick breakfast and we take a bag lunch to eat during our home visits. All other meals are eaten in restaurants. We plan 2-4 visits for each morning and another 2-4 for afternoons and plan at least 2 visits with each person we treat. Evenings include all team members discussing clients and sharing experiences. In Chernivtsi we stay in a centrally located hotel with 2 people in each room. In Kiev we stay in a church which offers comfortable accommodation in the center of the city. To appreciate the culture of Ukraine, we visit important cultural sites in Chernivtsi and places of historical interest in Kiev, include evening events such as the ballet, opera or circus and have time to shop in local markets for souvenirs. We plan a home visit for dinner of local foods one evening in Chernivtsi.

The cost for the trip includes accommodations, meals, translators and local transportation. Cultural events may be an extra cost and you may plan about $150 for these events and souvenirs. We take therapy supplies with us to use in treatment and have collected supplies, toys, games and hygiene products for children and adults we visit. These are usually donated to us from our communities and local hospitals. We also have taken some extra money which people donate to help with things like treats for children and to purchase some materials locally to make therapy equipment.

You will need a passport and must have international health care coverage.
